CTE · Skilled Trades · Vocational Training
Arizona's construction boom and skilled-worker shortage means trades students have some of the best career outlook and scholarship funding available. The path through a union apprenticeship or community college CTE program often costs less and pays faster than a four-year degree in many fields.
Arizona's rapid growth in housing construction, data centers, and semiconductor manufacturing has created acute demand for electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, welders, and construction managers. That demand has driven real scholarship investment: the Associated General Contractors of Arizona, Home Builders Association of Central Arizona, and Arizona Builders Alliance all run scholarship programs for CTE and construction students. SkillsUSA Arizona and the Arizona Welding Professionals Association fund skilled-trades scholarships. Community college CTE programs — through Maricopa, Pima, Yavapai, and Mohave Community Colleges — have their own foundation awards that go undersubscribed every year. For students in CTE-aligned high school programs, Arizona offers the CTE Excellence Award and CareerSafe industry certifications that add weight to scholarship applications.

Things worth knowing
Union apprenticeship programs are partially funded — apply early
IBEW (electrical), UA Plumbers & Pipefitters, and the Arizona Carpenters union all run apprenticeship programs that pay you while you train. The application window opens once a year and competition is real — start researching junior year.
SkillsUSA and Skills competition wins carry weight in trades applications
A state or national SkillsUSA medal in welding, cabinetry, or automotive technology is the equivalent of a STEM competition win — it signals genuine technical competency to scholarship reviewers and employers alike.
Community college CTE scholarships are routinely underfunded because no one applies
Maricopa Community Colleges' foundation, Yavapai College Foundation, and Pima Foundation all award CTE-specific scholarships every year. These funds frequently roll over because too few students apply. The application is short and the competition is light.
