Most school- and nonprofit-run competitions are free or low-cost; a few national ones charge a registration fee. Check the listing, and ask a teacher or counselor — schools will often cover an entry fee if you ask.
A placement or award is concrete, verifiable evidence of skill and initiative, which stands out more than participation alone. Even entering shows admissions you pursue challenges beyond the classroom — and gives you a real story for essays and interviews.
