The most powerful college-prep move is also the earliest — the courses you sign up for in high school. No one tells first-gen students that the harder math, the lab sciences, and a fourth year of one language open doors (and scholarships). Here’s what to aim for, and why.
All four years — add honors or AP English when you’re ready.
Every college expects four years, and strong reading and writing carry every other class, your essays, and the SAT/ACT.
First-gen tip: Reading for fun, in any language, quietly builds the skill that shows up everywhere — it counts more than it looks.
Through Algebra 2 at minimum; reach Pre-Calculus or Calculus if you can.
How far you get in math is one of the strongest signals to colleges and a gatekeeper for STEM, business, and health majors — and for merit scholarships.
First-gen tip: Don’t quietly stop at the minimum. Taking the next math (even if it’s hard) keeps doors open you can’t reopen later.
Three to four years, including lab sciences — biology, chemistry, and physics.
Lab sciences are required or expected for most majors, and they’re where you find out if a health or engineering path fits you.
First-gen tip: If a science clicks, that’s a real clue about a major and a career — pay attention to it.
Three to four years — history, government, and economics.
Beyond the requirement, government and economics teach the systems (voting, money, policy) you’ll navigate as an adult.
First-gen tip: An AP history or gov class is great essay and interview fuel — and good practice for college reading loads.
Two years minimum of the SAME language; four years really stands out.
Selective colleges and many scholarships look for 3–4 years of one language, and it can place you out of a college requirement.
First-gen tip: Already bilingual? You may be able to test for credit or take an AP exam in your home language — ask your counselor. It’s an asset, not a shortcut.
At least one year — and go deeper in something you love.
Arizona requires a fine-art or career/technical credit, and sustained depth in one area (art, music, coding, a trade) is what makes an application memorable.
First-gen tip: Depth beats variety. Three years of one thing tells a better story than one year of five different things.
The honest rule: take the most challenging courses you can handle while still earning strong grades. Colleges read rigor and GPA together — an A in honors usually beats a C in AP, but both beat coasting.
On-level
The foundation. Do these well — a strong GPA in solid classes beats a weak one in hard classes.
Honors
A step up in pace and depth, usually with a GPA weight. A good place to stretch once you’re steady.
AP / IB
College-level courses with an exam that can earn real college credit — and the rigor colleges look for most.
Dual enrollment
Actual community-college classes in high school — cheap (or free) college credit that often transfers in Arizona.
The Arizona baseline
ASU, UA, and NAU expect a core of about 16 year-courses — 4 English, 4 math, 3 lab science, 2 social science, 2 of one second language, and 1 fine art or career/technical credit. Meeting it (with a solid GPA) is the surest path to assured admission. Always confirm current specifics with your counselor and the university.
A guide, not a mandate — your counselor knows your school’s specific course names and sequences. The throughline: take the most you can handle and do well, and don’t quietly stop at the minimum.
