Arizona's Most Prestigious Scholarship

The Flinn Scholarship.

$25,000+/year for four years at ASU, UA, or NAU — full tuition, room and board, a living stipend, and a funded international experience. Arizona's premier merit scholarship, selecting ~20 scholars per year from across the state.

You must be nominated by your high school. The Flinn Scholarship is not a direct application — your principal or counselor must nominate you. Not every school participates every year. If you think you qualify, ask your counselor now, even in 10th or 11th grade, so your school knows to consider you.

What Flinn looks for

Academic excellence

Exceptional GPA and rigorous coursework (AP, IB, dual enrollment). The Flinn expects the strongest academic records in Arizona. Most scholars have 3.9+ unweighted GPAs and multiple AP courses.

Leadership

Demonstrated leadership in school, community, or extracurricular contexts. Quality over quantity — being president of one organization that you meaningfully shaped is stronger than holding a dozen titles.

Service and community impact

Sustained, meaningful community service — not just hours logged. Flinn looks for students who have identified a community need and worked to address it over time, not a single event.

Arizona connection

You must be an Arizona resident (or attending an Arizona high school). The program is explicitly designed to keep Arizona's top students in the state — they want scholars who will build their careers here.

Character and intellectual curiosity

Curiosity, integrity, and genuine engagement with ideas. The interview evaluates how you think, not just what you know. Scholars should be able to discuss their ideas with depth and nuance.

Application timeline (senior year)

Junior year, spring

Research the Flinn Foundation and determine if you meet basic eligibility. Start building your candidacy: leadership roles, community service, academic distinction.

August–September (senior year)

Flinn opens nominations in the fall. You must be nominated by your high school — contact your principal or counselor. Not all high schools nominate students every year. Ask early.

October

Nomination deadline (check Flinn Foundation website for exact date). Your school submits your nomination. You'll then be invited to submit a full application.

November–December

Submit your full application: personal statements, essays, activity list, two letters of recommendation (one from a teacher, one from a community mentor), and official transcript.

January–February

Semifinalist interviews. Selected candidates are invited to a structured in-person or virtual interview with Flinn judges. This is a rigorous, multi-person panel interview — prepare thoroughly.

March

Finalists invited for final selection events. Finalists spend a weekend with Flinn Foundation and existing scholars. Final scholars are selected shortly after.

April

Recipients announced. Scholars select their home institution (ASU, UA, or NAU) and begin planning their four-year experience, including international study.

Preparing for the Flinn interview

Know why Arizona — specifically

Flinn wants scholars who will contribute to Arizona's future. Be ready to articulate specific ways you plan to give back to the state — vague answers about 'making an impact' won't cut it.

Have a real intellectual passion

Interviewers will probe your interests deeply. Pick one or two intellectual areas you genuinely care about and can discuss at length. Surface-level answers are easy to spot.

Practice discussing your community project

Be able to tell the story of your most meaningful service or leadership experience: what problem you identified, what you did, what you learned, what you would do differently. Quantify impact where possible.

Prepare for current events and policy questions

Flinn interviews often include questions about Arizona-specific policy, current events, or ethical dilemmas. Read the Arizona Republic, follow AZ education policy, and practice thinking out loud.

Visit your target campus before the interview

You should have an informed opinion about which university you would choose and why. Visit the campus, talk to students, research programs — your answer should be specific and thoughtful.
