American Foreign Service Association (AFSA)
What you'll need
AFSA's flagship outreach contest invites U.S. high school students in grades 9-12 to write a 1,000-1,500 word essay on an annually announced foreign-policy/diplomacy theme. It is open nationwide to students in public, private, parochial, or home schools across the 50 states, D.C., and U.S. territories, plus U.S. citizens attending high school overseas. The first-place winner receives $2,500, an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to meet State Department officials, and a fully funded Semester at Sea educational voyage.
