What the PSAT is

A practice version of the SAT, given at school — officially the PSAT/NMSQT.
It tests the same skills and format as the SAT, but it doesn't count toward college admission.
Think of it as a low-stakes preview that shows you where you stand.

When & why you take it

Many students take it in 10th grade for practice and 11th grade for the one that counts for National Merit.
It previews the real SAT and flags your strengths and weak spots early.
Your score report points you toward what to study before the SAT.

National Merit & scholarships

A high junior-year PSAT/NMSQT score can qualify you for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
It can also connect you to other scholarships and recognition programs.

How to prepare
